Aida is an opera originally written by Giuseppe Verdi. The opera has been adapted into a film several times and the story was also used for a version of the play written by Sir Elton John and Tim Rice. The duo used their own score when they composed the adaptation. The costumes and stage design from some recent productions looks mesmerizing as the play is set in Ancient Egypt during the time of the Old Kingdom. The opera’s plot follows a young Ethiopian princess (Aida) that is enslaved in Egypt, the Egyptian leader (Radames) who conquered her homeland falls in love with the princess. The Pharaoh’s jealous daughter (Amneris) has her own desires for the army’s leader which creates dramatic scenarios that only a love triangle can produce. The opera is a passionate love story that is accompanied by impressive choruses, captivating orchestral music, and dazzling displays of costumes and scene design. The opera is playing multiple dates in New York, but will only be in Chicago for a short time in March 2012. Be sure to catch this powerfully moving opera that was originally written in the 19th century, and has been moving audiences ever since.
