A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is a musical comedy that tells the story of Monty Navarro and his determination to eliminate anyone who gets in the way of his goal of laying claim to a distant family fortune. Based on Roy Horniman's 1907 novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal, the musical was written as a collaboration between Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak. The duo premiered the musical in 2012 in Hartford, Connecticut. In 2013 A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder enjoyed a run at the Old Glove Theatre in San Diego, California before making its Broadway debut at the Walter Kerr Theatre on November 17, 2013. A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder has been recognized by a variety of organizations including the Tony Awards, Drama League Awards, and Grammy Awards since it's Broadway debut. In 2014 the musical won four out of ten nominations at the Tony Awards, including in the category of Best Musical. The show has been heralded by the New York Times as "ingenious" and "among the most inspired and entertaining new musicals." In the musical, Monty Navarro, who has been brought to life onstage by Ken Barnett and Bryce Pinkham, learns that his recently deceased mother was a spurned aristocrat who abandoned her riches for love. As such, Navarro is currently 9th in line to receive a family fortune that would drag him up from a mundane life of hard work. Reluctantly at first he embarks upon a journey of making his way up the line of succession. Along the way, the musical is filled with musical musings such as Navarro's solo "Foolish to Think," in which he details his struggle, and later tracks like "Poison in My Pocket" as the protagonist makes his move to claim an earldom.
