Entering the 2013 NHL season the Calgary Flames will look to improve from last season where they finished 2nd in the Northwest Division and didn’t qualify for the playoffs for a third year in a row. The Flames proved to be solid at times but were often inconsistent, and by the end of the regular season they were 5 points short of qualifying for the playoffs. The disappointing end to their season forced the Flames’ organization to reconsider several aspects of the team and first on the agenda was finding a new head coach to replace Brent Sutter when his contract ended earlier this year. The Flames’ organization announced that Bob Hartley would be taking Sutter’s spot behind the Flames’ bench and hopes that Hartley’s presence can help improve the team’s shot at redemption this season. The Flames’ captain Jarome Iginla led his team in goals (32) and scored his 500th goal of his career last season, proving he is an integral part of this offense. Along with Iginla, wingers Mike Cammalleri and Alex Tanguay were both solid and reliable forces that helped generate plenty of scoring chances last season. The Flames’ blue line is full of talent and, in fact, too full; they will need to either send someone to the AHL or make a trade. One suspected trade could involve tough guy Jay Bouwmeester, whose contract will take a $6.68 million hit out of the Flames’ cap next year. While Bouwmeester holds a no-trade clause in his contract, it would seem sensible that he would take a deal if the right onewere to come along. Goalie Miikka Kiprusoff, whose GAA was a solid 2.35, won his 300th game last season, a milestone that should remind fans that their netminder is a talented, and more importantly, experienced player. Expect to see the Calgary Flames hungry for redemption and make shot at the playoffs in the 2013 NHL season. Don’t miss a thing by getting your tickets from your guy at Gold Coast Tickets today! The Calgary Flames are based in Calgary, Alberta and play hockey in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. The Flames were first founded in 1972 as the Atlanta Flames, but in 1980 they relocated to Calgary. Since then, they have gone on to win 3 conference titles, 5 division titles, 2 Presidents’ Trophies, and 1 Stanley Cup in 1988-89. In 2004, they made an unexpected run to the Stanley Cup Finals that would give rise to the Red Mile, a several-block stretch in Calgary where fans wearing the team’s red colors famously celebrated and continue to flood on big game-days. Jarome Iginla is currently the franchise leader in games played, goals, and points while goaltender Miikka Kiprusoffhas the most wins by a goaltender in Flames history. The Flames play their home games at Scotiabank Saddledom, which is one of the larger arenas in the NHL with a capacity of over 19,000 for hockey games. The Flames’ chief rival is the Edmonton Oilers and intense faceoffs between the two have been dubbed the “Battle of Alberta” by the fans and media.
