The NFC’s dominant team over the last two years has restored interest in the shutdown defense, in an era where offense dominates. But not running the ball themselves is what may have ultimately cost them a championship, as Russell Wilson threw a pick at the 1-yard line on the Super Bowl comeback drive. This was the NFL’s #1 rushing offense, led by Marshawn Lynch (1,306 yards, 13 TDs) and Wilson himself (849 yards, 6 TDs). Losing Golden Tate last offseason meant Doug Baldwin (66 rec, 825 yards) was their #1 receiver, followed by Jermaine Kearse (38 rec, 537 yards). Not exactly a powerhouse duo. To give Wilson a true #1 target, the Hawks pulled off a stunning trade of elite center Max Unger and a first-round pick to New Orleans for elite TE Jimmy Graham. Graham instantly gives Seattle their first Pro Bowl-caliber receiver in the Wilson era. The defense, first in overall yards allowed, scoring, pass yards allowed, and third in rushing yards allowed, loses CB Byron Maxwell but adds Michigan DE Frank Clark. Clark was the team’s first draft pick although that didn’t come until #63 overall. The defense retains KJ Wright, Pro Bowler Kam Chancellor and 1st-team All-Pros Bobby Wagner, Earl Thomas, and Richard Sherman. Those guys are all more valuable than any decent wide receiver. The Seattle Seahawks operate under head coach Pete Carroll at CenturyLink Field in the SoDo district of Seattle. Behind the loudest fan base, young, marketable stars, bold uniforms, winning ways, and dominant defense reminiscent of old school football, the Hawks are on of the NFL’s most exciting franchises right now. Their season was classically highlighted by an epic comeback at home against Green Bay in the NFC title game, when it looked like their season was coming to an end. The Seahawks have won 36 regular season and six playoff wins over the last three seasons. The franchise has been highly successful since their 2002 shift to the NFC. Since then, they’ve made the playoffs in nine of 13 years including three Super Bowl appearances and one win. Under Carroll they’ve had the league’s best scoring defense the last three years. All time, the Seahawks have nine division titles and 14 playoff appearances since first taking the field in 1976. 2015 home opponents include Chicago, Detroit on Monday night, Carolina, Arizona on Sunday night, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and St. Louis.
