2013 Record: 8-8 It was an extremely auspicious start to the 2013 season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They dropped their first four games in rout to a 2 and 6 start. Even with a bad start the Steelers were in contention for the playoffs come the end of the year. With three wins in their last three games the Steelers actually would have made the playoffs if the Kansas City Chiefs had won their last game. The Chiefs did not get the job done and the Steelers missed the playoffs. Much of the struggles can be traced back to a faltering running game and a less than stellar defense. Rookie running back Le’Veon Bell (Michigan State) suffered an injury in the preseason which severed as a major setback. He returned midway through the season but never properly found his footing. The 2013 season was also the first time under Dick Lebeau (D-coordinator) that the Steelers defense finished outside of the top ten. The Steelers immediately responded to this by drafting Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier in the first round of the draft. Shazier has impressed so far in the off season workouts and looks to start from day one. It was fantastic season for Ben Roethlisberger and receiver Antonio Brown. Big Ben threw for over 4,000 yards and found the endzone 28 times while only throwing 24 interceptions. His most frequent target was Antonio Brown who pulled down 110 catches while racking up 1449 yards. If the Steelers want to get back into the playoffs look for an improved running game and defense. The Steelers jump right into the action and will meet division rival Baltimore in only the second week of the season.
