Want to help reaffirm the Giants’ status as NFL top dog in NYC? What better time than this December 6, when they host the city rival Jets! The Giants took a step backward last season at 6-10. It was their worst season record-wise since 2004 and the fifth no-playoff season in the last six years. A lousy 3-9 start doomed them, mainly thanks to a weak defense and running game. Andre Williams averaged just 3.3 yards per carry in his rookie season. Rashad Jennings wasn’t much better. Eli Manning returned to respectability, much thanks to the breakout year from Odell Beckham Jr. with 1,305 yard and 12 touchdowns. To fix that rushing problem, they signed Shane Vereen in free agency. Look for some of their draftees, including first round OT Ereck Flowers (Miami) and S Landon Collins (Alabama), to get immediate playing time. They didn’t add much in free agency besides Vereen, however, so it’ll be up to Tom Coughlin on his last chance to get the team back to the playoffs. The New York Giants operate under head coach Coughlin at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Coughlin’s job has saved in nod to the two Super Bowl titles he has brought to New York, in 2007 and 2011. That makes it four Super Bowl titles for the franchise, all since 1986, and four pre-Super Bowl NFL Championships. Add in 16 division titles and 31 playoff appearances and you’ve got one of the NFL’s most successful teams in recent decades. But there’s no doubt fans want to get back into the deep playoffs again. It remains to be seen if 34 year old Manning will be the one to do that. The Giants are the more popular team in New York for a reason, and their fans will out there in full force as usual at MetLife. 2015 home opponents include Atlanta, Washington on Thursday night, San Francisco in prime time, Dallas, New England, the rare Jets/Giants city game, Carolina, and Philadelphia.
