2013 Result: 34-48, missed playoffs A year after impressing the nation with solid team play driving them into the second round of the playoffs, the 76ers were supposed to take a step forward with the acquisition of Andrew Bynum. Instead the team underperformed all year and Bynum never played a game in a Philly uniform. He’s now a Cleveland Cavalier, so they’re very much in the same position they were before. But now they have Kentucky center Nerlens Noel and Syracuse guard Michael Carter-Williams, two rookies who should make an immediate impact. Point guard Jrue Holiday had been the go-to guy in town but he was traded to New Orleans for the draft pick that brought in Noel. Holiday is an exciting talent but Noel could be a franchise-changing big man. Jason Richardson has seen better days at age 32, but he provides strong insurance and, if he can get his shot back, instant offense off the bench. He could also mentor Carter-Williams. Small forward Evan Turner set a career high in points per game last year at 13.3, but his field goal percentage went way down and the Sixers expected more out of a guy playing 35.3 minutes per game. It remains to be seen how much he can actually give them. With the exception of Richardson, all of the Sixers’ core players including Thaddeus Young and Spencer Hawes are young. In the NBA that can be a major advantage or disadvantage. For the Sixers it was an advantage under Doug Collins, but their talent still came up short. Now they have a go-to scorer in Carter-Williams and a dominant big in Noel, but no coach. If they choose the right coach, the young Sixers could march right back into the playoffs this year. The Philadelphia 76ers are based in Philadelphia and are members of the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division of the NBA. The Sixers have one of the most storied histories in the NBA, with many of the greatest NBA players of all time having played in Philadelphia throughout the years. The Sixers were founded in 1949 as the Syracuse Nationals since then have won 3 NBA championships (1954-55, 1966-67, 1982-83). The last time the Sixers appeared in Finals was in the 2001 Playoffs where the Los Angeles Lakers defeated them, 4-1. Some of the legends who have played for the Sixers include Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Julius Erving, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson.
