2013 Result: 56-26 (5th West seed), lost in Conference Finals to San Antonio The Grizz are experiencing the greatest success in franchise history over the last few seasons. They won two playoff series last year, which is double as many as they had ever won in franchise history before that. In this era of big-market NBA teams collecting superstars (see: Boston or Miami’s Big Three, the Lakers’ collection of Nash-Bryant-Gasol-Howard, and even San Antonio), Memphis has employed an old-school strategy of depth and defense up and down the roster, a strategy similarly employed by Denver. They were so devoted to the strategy that they traded lifetime Grizz member and leading scorer Rudy Gay to Toronto for Ed Davis and Jose Calderon in a move that also dumped plenty of salary. The Grizzlies thought they had enough depth to make up for it and they did until the deep playoffs, when star power matters. But the Grizz did get at least 75 starts out of Zach Randolph (15.4 PPG, 11.2 RPG), Mike Conley (14.6 PPG, 6.1 APG), Marc Gasol (14.1 PPG, 7.8 RPG), and Tony Allen (premier perimeter defender). But when it comes down to the end of the game, the Grizzlies lacked a definitive guy to take crucial shots, and Randolph isn’t that type of player. Memphis was low on draft picks because of trades for Shane Battier and Marreese Speights in years past but they acquired Kosta Koufos in a draft day trade. The Jazz are going to get robbed on this deal as Koufos has a ton of potential. After resigning Allen and adding Kuofos the Grizz are in great position to contend again. Make sure to get your tickets to the ‘Grind House’ to see one of the greatest defensive shows in basketball this winter. The Memphis Grizzles represent the city of the Memphis, Tennessee in the Southwest Division and Western Conference of the NBA. The Grizzles were founded in 1995 as an expansion team for Vancouver. The Vancouver Grizzles struggled throughout their existence and finished their final game with a record of 101-359. When the Grizzles relocated to Memphis in 2001, they found some stability in Pau Gasol until trading him into 2008. Memphis has made six playoff appearances but is still reaching for its first Finals apperance. Become a part of history by getting your tickets to the Memphis Grizzles’ 2013-14 NBA season today!
