2013 Result: 41-40 (7th East seed), lost in Conference Quarterfinals to New York The Boston ‘Big Three’ era is over.  A year after losing Ray Allen to Miami, the Celtics have finally called it quits on the Paul Pierce-Kevin Garnett-Allen trio after just one championship and two Finals appearances in six years.  The players they received in the trade (Kris Humphries, Reggie Evans, Gerald Wallace, Tornike Shengelia, Keith Bogans, and Kris Joseph) aren’t nearly as important as the three first-round draft picks they got, which gives them opportunities to find franchise-changing players to build around Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green.  The Celtics also executed a rare exchange involving a coach, trading well-regarded Doc Rivers to the Clippers for a first-round pick in 2015.  New coach Brad Stevens comes from a strong Butler basketball program.  This is definitely a new age of basketball in Boston, and may not result in a playoff berth this year, this rebuild was bound to happen at some point and the good news is the Celtics cut off the Big Three while they still had value.  Now with a young, fairly talented roster and four extra first-round draft picks coming up, it shouldn’t take long for the Celtics to get back into the deep playoffs.     The Boston Celtics are one of the most storied and successful franchises in the history of the NBA. Since forming in 1946, the Boston Celtics have won 17 championships, more than any other team in the NBA. From 1957 to 1969, the Celtics won 11 championships in 13 years, 8 of them in a row (1959-1966). The Celtics owe their years of success to a number of NBA greats including Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, Larry Bird, and coaches Red Auerbach and Doc Rivers. This rebuilding season will feature a lot more youth and role players, and Rondo could finally be the face of the franchise.
