The Nationals may have DC’s biggest rising star at the moment in Bryce Harper. After a couple years of flashes but struggles as well, Harper put it all together early in 2015 with a relentless show of power. The Nats lost Adam LaRoche in the offseason and Jayson Werth was injured, so the production was necessary on a team that wasn’t getting power from anywhere else. Wilson Ramos, Ryan Zimmerman, and Ian Desmond haven’t even hit their strides yet, so the Nationals are in good position to take off with this division. Anthony Rendon’s return from injury is also huge for the lineup. Speaking of not having hit their stride, their rotation, which on paper is the best in MLB, hasn’t come close. Max Scherzer began the season dominant but Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez, and Stephen Strasburg didn’t pitch to their potential and Doug Fister wound up on the DL. Any of those guys could be an ace on a bad team--don’t doubt them as the favorites of the NL East. The Washington Nationals play at Nationals Park on the south side of DC, one of the more modern parks in the nation. They’ve developed a sizable fan base in the nation’s capital through putting good teams on the field the last four seasons. In 10 full seasons in DC, they’ve already made more playoff appearances than 36 full seasons of Montreal Expos teams did by a count of two to one. That may not be saying much but their NLDS losses in 2012 and 2014 have left the franchise unsatisfied--they’re certain to be back in October baseball, and likely to hang around later.
