2013: 76-86 (4th in NL West) The Giants are coming off a disappointing 2013 season where, as defending champs, they missed the playoffs mostly due to a regressive pitching rotation. Pitching had been the Giants strength for the past half-decade. They seem to have recaptured much of their old ways though. It’s come in large part from free agent signee Tim Hudson, who began the season on fire. Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum used to rule this rotation but neither appear to be the same pitchers they once were. Lincecum in particular has been below average for a third straight season, although sabermetrics show say he hasn’t been as bad as it seems. Luckily for San Fran Madison Bumgarner is putting together another great season and Ryan Vogelsong is showing his dismal 2013 was an anomaly. In typical Giants fashion, the bullpen is great between Sergio Romo, Santiago Casilla, Jean Machi, JC Gutierrez, Javier Lopez, and Jeremy Affeldt. Former MVP and Rookie of the Year catcher Buster Posey is quietly putting together another season as the irreplaceable cog in the lineup, getting on base more often than almost all catchers and throwing in power. Hunter Pence packs a punch in that compact swing still, Angel Pagan continues to hit well, Mike Morse has been a pleasant acquisition in the power department, and Brandon Belt has shown signs of finally breaking out. AT&T Park is one of the most oppressive offensive environments in the league; not coincidentally the Giants have never known for an overpowering offense. But manager Bruce Bochy pulls the right strings more often than not. The Giants score a lot more runs than you’d think. AT&T Park is a wildly rampant baseball culture. Giants fans pack the stadium night in and night out better than only a couple other fan bases. Be sure to walk around the right field plaza to check out McCovey Cove, and you just might reel in a home run ball.
