2013: 62-100, 5th in NL East The Marlins had their second-worst season in franchise history in 2013. It was especially disappointing given the optimism the previous season had started with; an anemic offense made the team hard to watch. But the reinvented front office learned from its mistakes, making low-cost, high-upside player acquisitions to fill in holes where the farm system couldn’t provide ready replacements. The results were power-hitting catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, signed from the World Champion Red Sox, third baseman Casey McGehee, who revised his hitting approach in Japan and was ready to prove he could be a Major League run producer again, and first baseman Garrett Jones, an under-the-radar slugger at first base for Pittsburgh the last few years. Early results were highly impressive. Behind the new acquisitions and a great starting rotation, the Marlins are in their best position to contend in probably a decade. The strength of this team is no secret; a young rotation they’ve been building the last few years in Henderson Alvarez (acquired in the Jose Reyes/Mark Buehrle trade from Toronto), Nathan Eovaldi (the Hanley Ramirez trade from Los Angeles), Jacob Turner (the Anibal Sanchez trade from Detroit), and Tom Koehler and Jose Fernandez (two original drafted-and-signed Marlins products). Key bullpen pieces Steve Cishek and A.J. Ramos were also developed by the Marlins. It’s fair to say that, more or less , this front office is on fire. Rarely do you see a team bank on so many trades and acquisitions in succession. All of this means that while the loss of reigning Rookie of the Year and strong Cy Young candidate Fernandez is a crushing blow, the team could continue to play quality ball all summer. Early on the Marlins were extremely tough to beat at cavernous Marlins Park, scoring a ridiculous amount of runs considering last year it seemed they were getting shut out more often than not. The beautiful Marlins Park is also home to some delicious food options. Check out the Taste of Miami or delicious Sir Pizza. In Miami-esque fashion you can even go clubbing during the game if you buy a ticket in the Clevelander beyond the left field fence. Whatever your reason, Marlins Park actually does have something for everyone. Gold Coast Tickets can hook you up with the best selection of Miami Marlins tickets!
