2013: 74-88, 5th in NL West Victims of a typically awful pitching staff, the Rockies endured a rough 2013. With the offense the Rockies typically field, all they need is an average to above-average staff to start winning. And that’s just what they’ve done early on in 2014. Over the winter they pulled the trigger on a tough trade that was criticized by many, trading leadoff center fielder Dexter Fowler to Houston for faded prospect Jordan Lyles, a flyball pitcher who was a risky asset to bring into homer-happy Coors Field. Sure enough he reeled off a great stretch to start the season. Jorge De La Rosa and Juan Nicasio are passable rotation members after that. Oft-injured Brett Anderson got injured in mid-April and wouldn’t return until June, but the Rockies have an even stronger chance at winning with him on the mound. 41-year-old LaTroy Hawkins has been an okay closer, but Tommy Kahnle, Rex Brothers, Adam Ottavino, and Boone Logan have been the best out of the bullpen. Any writing on the Rox would be incomplete without massive praise of shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who was undoubtedly the best player in baseball over the first couple months of the season, getting on base nearly 50% of the time. Carlos Gonzalez and Justin Morneau have been elite run producers as well; that Colorado air has helped Morneau revitalize his career. Charlie Blackmon was a confoundingly good hitting machine early on. With Drew Stubbs hitting well too, it’s been hard to even find playing time for last year’s batting champ Michael Cuddyer. Maybe the atmosphere is really intoxicating for hitters out there. The only serious disappointment so far has been Wilin Rosario, who couldn’t find the stroke the first two months of the season. Coors Field is always a great place to see a ballgame. It benefits from being in a thriving downtown, having a loyal young fan base, and offering great amenities and food options. In fact, the Rockies ripped out the upper deck in right field, putting in two decks of bars and open spaces for which they sell hundreds of standing room passes. Anyone in the ballpark can head over there though, so make sure to grab a drink and hang out in one of MLB’s coolest ballpark renovations.
