Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (known to many as Herbie Hancock) is a prolific jazz pianist and composer hailing from Chicago, Illinois and known for his complex style of playing and his tracks such as "Watermelon Man" and "Cantaloupe Island." A pupil of Miles Davis and a member of his Second Great Quintet, Hancock has played a large role in redefining the role of jazz music in a modern day. As a composer and performer Hancock was renowned for his inclusion of sounds and production from different genres including rock, funk, and soul, all of which led to a more relaxed jazz oriented sound. With his background in engineering and an appreciation for all types of gadgets and electronics, Herbie Hancock was one of the first jazz musicians to welcome electronic instrumentation into the genre. Hancock began playing the piano at the young age of seven and was considered a prodigy by many due to his skills from such a young age. At eleven he received a solo with the Chicago Symphony, and from there he continued his education in the realm of music. Over his many years releasing music Herbie Hancock has undertook a variety of projects. He has worked alongside fellow jazz greats such as Clark Terry, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, and Miles Davis. He has also scored films, getting his start with Michelangelo Antonioni's 1996 release Blow Up. He has won a collection of accolades including several Grammys. In 2008 he became the second jazz artist to receive an award in the Album of the Year category for his tribute to Joni Mitchell River: The Joni Letters. To this day Herbie Hancock's eclectic and impressive styling can be heard onstage.
