Whether Be The Ant is a band or a cult remains to be seen. These five strapping young men all plummeted to Earth from the same family tree. Decades later, their cryptic, hauntingly beautiful music seemed to erupt out of nowhere, after three fifths of the unit spontaneously uprooted from the East Coast and drifted toward the mountains of Colorado. So the entity of the band, the mystique surrounding it, and the sounds it has spawned, all beg the question: What are these guys really up to? Who cares? The … whatever it is … is made up of two sets of brothers, one being Matt Bozeman and Erik Petersen, a pair you may recognize from Denver’s The Pickup Artist. The other set is Lehi Petersen, Jared Petersen, and Troy Ten Eyck. These three spent recent years beating up the East Coast, Jared and Lehi with Virginia Beach’s J Karner and the Petersen Brothers, and Troy with Atlanta’s In Secret. The two tracks they’ve teased us with thus far, from their “Two Human” E.P., both fill any room like smoke and make you feel like your brain might float away. The feeling’s hard to pinpoint, and it’s harder to tell if it’s from the intricate shredding on “Too Humans” or the sugar-sweet bop-bops on “We And My Friends.” The lyrics are both thought-provoking and whimsical, ranging from philosophical ponderings like “What does it mean to move?” to neo-slacker truisms like “If I seem like I’m high, then you know I’m all right.” And their live ritual/show is as high-energy as, well, five maniacal brothers and cousins killin’ it on stage. So, if it’s a band, then take note because it’s one of a kind. And if it’s a cult, then pass the mothafuckin’ kool-aid. By: Doug Callahan Read more on Last.fm.
