The road to relevance has felt like a long one for Purdue, but it’s important to remember they’re already two years from hitting rock bottom in a 1-11 2013 season. The 2014 squad made progress in winning its first Big Ten game in two seasons and winning three games overall, but they were easily blown out against the conference’s better teams. But there is hope for a better record in 2015, starting with returning quarterback Austin Appleby. 2014’s top two leading rushers are gone so the running game is a bit of a free-for-all. Danny Anthrop returns as the undisputed #1 receiver, but we’re talking about an offense that ranked tenth in the conference in passing and rushing offense. The defense was worse, allowing nearly 32 points per game and not doing anything particularly well. But an influx of three-star recruits and a young roster overall should at the very least improve Purdue’s win-loss record. The Purdue Boilermakers operate under head coach Darrell Hazell at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana. While not known as a football school, the last few years have been especially rough for Purdue fans. The team last made a bowl in the 2012 season, its second in a row at the time. While they qualified for a bowl 10 out of 11 seasons between 1997 and 2007, the program hasn’t won 10 games in a season since 1979 and has always struggled against Big Ten powerhouses. Still, they hold a .525 all-time winning percentage, 12 conference championships, and have sent 273 players to the NFL, which ranks 22nd in the nation. Famous players include Drew Brees, Rod Woodson, Bob Griese, Kyle Orton, Len Dawson, Ryan Kerrigan, Anthony Spencer, and Bernard Pollard. The team shares rivalries with Indiana, Notre Dame, and Illinois. 2015 home opponents include Indiana State, Virginia Tech, Bowling Green, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois, and Indiana.
