By most schools’ standards, Nebraska’s 9-4 season was a big success. In fact, the Huskers won at least nine games and qualified for a bowl in each of coach Bo Pelini’s seven seasons. But this isn’t most schools, and Pelini was fired as the team went just 7-17 against ranked teams in his tenure and didn’t come close to a national title since joining the Big Ten in 2010. New coach Mike Riley, from Oregon State, will aim for a national title. He’ll have QB Tommy Armstrong back but loses RB Ameer Abdullah (1,523 rush yards, 18 TDs) and WR Kenny Bell (717 rec yards, 5 TDs) to the NFL. Those are big losses, and a rebuilding offensive line will need to shore itself up quickly. Nebraska scored just under 38 points per game, third-best in the Big Ten, but the passing game wasn’t relied on as heavily with Abdullah running the offense. Another question lies on the defense side of the ball, where the loss of Randy Gregory leaves a defensive line that didn’t do much around him. Riley faces an uphill battle against Big Ten West favorite Wisconsin, but perhaps change will do the program well. The Nebraska Cornhuskers operate under head coach Mike Riley at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The Huskers are one of the greatest football programs in NCAA history, dominating the Big 12 for decades before a major shift to the Big Ten in 2011. Nebraska held a top ten national ranking at some point in every season between 1970 and 2003, winning five national titles along the way including three in the 90s. Some notable Nebraska players in the NFL right now include Ndamukong Suh, Richie Incognito, Roy Helu, and Prince Amukamara, and all time have sent 349 players (seventh-most) including Ahman Green, Roger Craig, Neil Smith, Irving Fryar, and Mike Brown. The 2011 conference shift ended their historic rivalries with Oklahoma and Missouri but revived a rivalry with Iowa and started a new one with fellow perennial contender Wisconsin. 2015 home games include BYU, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan State, and Iowa.
