What a season for Mississippi State, who found a national star in quarterback Dak Prescott. Behind 3,449 passing yards (27 TDs) and 986 rushing yards (14 TDs), Prescott navigated the SEC’s top offense with 514 yards per game. Leader of the rushing attack Josh Robinson is an Indianapolis Colt, so a running back competition is being held. With massive turnover on both sides of the ball, it won’t be easy to maintain last season’s success that got them a #1 ranking at one point, finishing with a 10-3 record. Even that team didn’t have a particularly good defense, allowing the most passing yards in the SEC and ranking middle of the pack in scoring. Safety Jamal Peters, who ESPN graded at 87, should improve the secondary significantly upon his arrival this season. Two other four-star linebackers and two four-star defensive tackles should bolster the rebuild of the defense. Where Mississippi State will shine, however, is offensively, with Prescott and returning wideout De’Runnya Wilson, one of the conference’s best. With a typically difficult SEC schedule awaiting, there isn’t much buffer time to transition to new personnel. Keep an eye on that Week 2 home game against LSU as an early test. The Mississippi State Bulldogs operate under coach Dan Mullen at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville. It is the second-oldest stadium in the FBS, but it had never hosted a #1 Bulldogs team until 2014. The team fizzled out with three losses in their last four, including an Orange Bowl loss to a surprising Georgia Tech team, but it was still perhaps the best season in school history with a 9-0 start and that #1 rank. It was their fifth consecutive bowl appearance and 18th in school history, but they’ve still won just one conference title ever. They’ve also got ground to make up in their rivalries against LSU, Alabama, and Ole Miss (the Egg Bowl). But Prescott has brought a unheard of respectability to the program, so watch for this team to contend again. The 2015 home schedule includes LSU, Northwestern State, Troy, Louisiana Tech, Kentucky, Alabama, and Ole Miss. Want to ring a cowbell in person at the game?
