It was a breakout year for the Yellow Jackets and their awesome triple-option offense, finishing an 11-3 year with an Orange Bowl victory over Mississippi State. It was arguably their best season since winning the national title in 1990. They took advantage of a wide open Coastal division with the ACC’s best offense (38 points per game) and the second-best rush attack in the nation. QB Justin Thomas (1,719 pass yds, 1,086 rush yds, 26 total TDs) is a great fit for the option and one of the nation’s most exciting players. Following him on the ground were Zach Laskey (851 rush yds), Synjyn Davis (924 rush yds) and, incredibly, nine other players who ran for at least 100 yards. That’s what happens when you average 15 pass attempts to 56 rush attempts per game. The run defense was poor and will probably continue to be, but GT’s strategy involves relentlessly outscoring the opposition, even if it turns into a shootout. Watch the secondary though, an experienced, turnover-provoking unit that leads the defense. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets operate under coach Paul Johnson at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta. Tech is a four-time national champion, 16-time conference champ, has made 41 appearances, and holds a .594 winning percentage. They were ranked at some point every year between 2005 and 2011 but had gone through a few mediocre seasons until last year, which included wins over #19 Clemson and #9 Georgia. Despite not being regarded as a powerhouse, GT has one of the longest active bowl streaks with 18. Georgia Tech had sent 178 players to the NFL including Calvin Johnson, Demaryius Thomas, Philip Wheeler, Michael Johnson, Tashard Choice, and Ken Whisenhunt. The Yellow Jackets share rivalries with Georgia (called Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate), Auburn, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech. 2015 home opponents include Alcorn State, Tulane, UNC, Pitt, FSU, Virginia Tech, and Georgia.
