Lollapalooza Spotlight: Major Lazer

Lollapalooza Spotlight: Major Lazer

Five months after release of a second album, Jamaican soldier Major Lazer marches into Grant Park…

About Major Lazer

Who is Major Lazer? Major Lazer is actually a fictitious Jamaican commando who kills zombies with a laser for an arm and a rocket-powered skateboard. He is the creation of producers Dave “Switch” Taylor and Wes “Diplo” Pentz, although Switch is no longer affiliated with the project. Diplo has other vocalists and producers come in to help with new songs. Major Lazer’s first album, Guns Don’t Kill People…Lasers Do was recorded in Jamaica and released in June 2009 to critical acclaim. The next few years saw numerous mixtapes and EPs, such as 2010′s Lazerproof, a mixtape produced with La Roux, and 2011′s Original Don. The next full album, Free the Universe, came this April and reached a peak chart position of 34 in the United States, even reaching 17 in France, 9 in Belgium, and 5 in Australia. Major Lazer returns to Chicago at Lollapalooza for the first time since Labor Day Weekend in 2011, when Diplo and Switch performed at Union Park.
