Lollapalooza Spotlight: Childish Gambino
There are two things fans should take away from the slew of new Childish Gambino releases: 1) music is now Donald Glover’s main concern and 2) he’s furiously gearing up for a new release. The second point came to fruition today when it was announced that his next mixtape will be released on July 4th – one month before he takes the stage at Chicago’s Lollapalooza.
Now, let me back track for those who are unfamiliar with the origin of this 28-year-old rapper. Childish Gambino is the stage name for all around entertainer Donald Glover. He’s won awards for his writing for NBC’s 30 Rock, has had his own hour long stand-up special on Comedy Central and is currently starring in hit NBC sitcom Community. With his resume preceding him, Donald’s music career was often looked at with an asterisk by music critics, so much so that Pitchfork gave his debut LP Camp a dismal 1.6 out of 10 rating. Despite some of these harsh reviews, Camp debuted at number 11 on the Billboard charts and was widely considered an enjoyable album from the majority of the industry’s tastemakers.
While this success would be enough to allow most artists to dismiss their critics, lines in this new set of Childish Gambino releases make it clear he has a chip on his shoulder. Glover sounds better than ever on tracks like “We Ain’t Them” and “Should’ve Known” while collaborations with artists such as Nipsey Hussle, Schoolboy Q, Heems (of Das Racist) and Beck flaunts his ever improving versatility. What makes the elevated quality of these tracks more impressive is that the majority of them have been released from the road. Childish Gambino is currently right in the middle of the Camp Tour which hit Chicago’s Riveria Theatre back in May and has featured special guests such as Danny Brown and Chance The Rapper. The tour will come to an end in Detroit on August 3rd allowing him to make it to Chicago just in time for him to headline the August 4th official Lollapalooza aftershow at the Vic Theatre and perform at Lolla the next night .
