2013 Record (96-66) Lost to Tigers in playoffs
The 2013 season for the Oakland Athletics was an outstanding one. Led by manager, Bob Melvin the A’s made the playoffs in a very competitive AL West. Last year’s squad was led by solid team play on the offensive side of the ball and dominant pitching. Bartolo Colon, who led the team with 18 wins, is no longer an A but the A’s return star pitcher Sonny Gray who emerged in last year’s playoffs. Grant Balfour shut opposing team’s down at the end of the game as the clubs closer.
The A’s are in part famous for their general manager as well. Billy Beane has been with the club since 1998 and is regarded as the pioneer of sabermetrics in the MLB. Sabermetrics, now very popular within the league, is a way to measure player’s effectiveness using stats most people would not normally observe. This way of thinking has led the A’s to take a chance on players other clubs have already dismissed. It is also documented in the book and movie “Moneyball”.
Looking to the 2014 season, Sonny Gray has taken over as the team's undisputed ace. Gray, his supporting cast, and lively bats are a key reason the A’s are off to another hot start. Catcher Brandon Moss and outfielder and HR Derby Champion Yoenis Cespedes look to continue to carry the load offensively. Look for the A’s to continue playing solid baseball and to remain in the playoff hunt once again. Don’t miss out an opportunity to see this exciting ball club in action!
