The Northwestern Wildcats just finished up their 2012 regular season with a very impressive 9-3 record and are now on their way to the 2013 Gator Bowl! The Wildcats were able to improve over last season’s 6-7 record thanks to solid team play on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Cats were led at quarterback/wide receiver by Kain Colter and at runningback Venric Mark. As he did a season ago, Colter led the team in scoring with 8 passing touchdowns and 12 rushing touchdowns on the season. Colter wasn’t the only player who was a dual-threat for the Wildcats this season; runningback Venric Mark earned All-Big Ten 2nd Team honors for his 1,310 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing and earned All-American honors thanks to his fantastic year at punt returner. With both Mark and Colter being Juniors, Northwestern fans may be in for another of this high powered offense. On defense, the Wildcats have made tremendous improvements in almost every statistical category. The result has been the team lowering their average of points allowed by five points per game.
Many of the team’s achievements this season can also be accredited to head coach Pat Fitzgerald. In his playing days, he himself lined up for Northwestern; earning the Bronko Naguarski Trophy, Chuck Bednarik Award, All-American honors and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Award in both the 1995 and 1996 seasons. In 2008, Pat Fitzgerald was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Now in his 7th year coaching the Wildcats, Fitzgerald has been able to lead the team as passionately and triumphantly from the sideline as he did on the field. He has already become tied for the lead as Northwestern’s most winningest coach and has the opportunity for his first bowl win with Orange Bowl victory. Be sure to cheer on your Northwestern Wildcats as then enter post season play and expect another great season upcoming in 2013.
