2013: 74-88, 3rd in NL East
The Mets, still a team in transition, actually had the fourth-best road record in the National League last year. They got it done with young pitching; Dillon Gee, Matt Harvey, and Zack Wheeler lead one of the most promising young rotations in baseball. Star prospects Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero are on their way up to the Majors, making the Mets’ rotation quickly one of the best in the Majors. Unfortunately Harvey is missing this entire 2014 season from Tommy John surgery, which is probably the main reason the Mets signed ageless 41-year-old Bartolo Colon to stabilize the youth beneath him. Jenrry Mejia and Jacob deGrom have also emerged as a possible starters for the future. They need some help in the bullpen, though, where closer Bobby Parnell also underwent Tommy John and is out for the year. Kyle Farnsworth and Jose Valverde were both brought in as veteran emergency closers but neither really worked out. Perhaps a starter prospect who doesn’t have the best stamina can be converted into closer for this season while Parnell recovers.
Offensively, the lineup begins and ends with the professional David Wright at third base as it has for three to four years now. Wright had an odd power shortage at the beginning of 2014 but still hit in Wright-like fashion. Curtis Granderson signed to switch boroughs over the winter to provide some lineup protection and veteran leadership. The Mets otherwise have been desperate for outfield help, explaining the signings of Chris Young and Bobby Abreu. Speedy Chris Young and defensive stud Juan Lagares are also known to roam the outfield. Star prospect Travis d’Arnaud is the everyday catcher now. The good news for the Mets is that despite the dismal teams of the last few years, GM Sandy Alderson has built a great, pitching-deep farm system to build around now. They’re arriving in the big leagues now; Montero, d’Arnaud, Wheeler, deGrom, and Mejia can be seen at Citi Field. Meaning this is a great time to head out to a Mets game, and Gold Coast Tickets can hook you up with the best seats!
