Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens represent the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada in the NHL and are members of the Northeastern Division of the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens, also known as Les Habitants (Habs) were founded in 1909 and is the oldest team in the NHL, predating the founding of the NHL. Habs fans have something to smile about despite a disappointing season last year. In the 2011-12 NHL season, the Montreal Canadiens placed last in the Northeastern Division and failed to quality for the playoffs for the first time since 2007. But franchise has been already hard at work during the offseason to ensure that are no repeats of last season. The Canadiens drafted highly touted Alex Galchenyuk, who may need a season in AHL due to a major injury last season, and Sebastian Collberg, a Swedish winger who accumulated 17 points in 21 games for his junior team. New GM Marc Bergevin has been hard at work to bring a franchise with the most Stanley Cups its first in almost two decades. He has already renovated a majority of the coaching staff, bringing in new head coach Michel Therrien as well as new assistant coaches. The Canadiens defense should be fine, provided they reach a deal with key defenseman P.K. Subban. As long as the Canadiens can continue to have the success they found this offseason, the 2013 NHL season will likely see a turnaround in Montreal.

Since their founding, the Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cup championships, more than any other team in NHL. The last time the Canadiens won a Stanley Cup was in the 1992-93 NHL season against the LA Kings. Some of the best players to ever play for the Canadiens include Doug Harvey, Jean Beliveau, and Maurice Richard, all of them Hall of Famers who have had their numbers retired by the franchise. Since 1996, the Bell Centre has been home to the Canadiens and usually receives the highest attendance of any area in Canada. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins are two of the Canadiens biggest rivals.
