Minnesota Golden Gophers Basketball

After a banner 2013 in which they won their first NCAA Tournament game since 1997, Minnesota narrowly missed the bracket in 2014.  They got their revenge on bracketologists by winning the grand consolation prize, the NIT.  The 2014-15 season could be ordinary or revolutionary depending on who you ask.  New point guard Deandre Mathieu is a junior college transfer and a question mark.  He has dazzling raw talent, but unproven skill at this level.  In other news, Minnesota loses stud Austin Hollins (12.4 PPG) but keeps leading scorer Andre Hollins (13.6 PPG).  Only time will tell if Minnesota is ready for the ascent some believe it is, but it’s a near guarantee that the Golden Gophers will be competitive and fun to watch.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers operate under Coach Richard Pitino, son of famous Louisville coach Rick Pitino, at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.  Former coach Tubby Smith arrived in 2007 and rejuvenated a dwindling basketball program with six straight winning seasons, three NCAA Tournament appearances, and a Tournament win in 2013.  But Pitino comes from legendary coaching stock and should have a leg up on the competition.  Minnesota has sent 41 players to the NBA including two currently in the league in Joel Przybilla and Kris Humphries.  Other notable alums include Kevin McHale, Bobby Jackson, Mychal Thompson, and Mark Olberding.  They have 12 NCAA Tournament appearances all time but just one Final Four in 1997.  Watch this improving program get back to the Big Dance with Gold Coast Tickets!
