2013: 74-88, 4th in NL Central
The Brewers had an odd, up-and-down season in 2013. Fan favorite and former MVP Ryan Braun was suspended for the last 65 games of the season after failing a second drug test, drawing loads of controversy and really slicing chances of a late stretch run. But at the same time young Carlos Gomez and Jean Segura broke out in a big way. The aggressive Gomez plays the game at 110% effort and Segura turned into a dynamic speedy shortstop. A few key moves contributed to Milwaukee's early success in 2014. Outfielder Norichika Aoki was traded over the winter to Kansas City for shutdown lefty reliever Will Smith. Setup man Francisco Rodriguez, traded to Baltimore in a curious trade last summer, returned to the Crew via free agency, as did starter Matt Garza. The moves worked out early as underrated Milwaukee took first place for most of April and May. They've done it with a ridiculously dominant bullpen; Rodriguez took over the closer job from embattled Jim Henderson and hasn't looked back, fooling hitters like the K-Rod of old. They probably haven't peaked yet either; as of this writing, Garza has still struggled for most of the season and Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez have not been in the lineup together much lately.
This is the Brewers' best team since 2011 for sure, making this a great time to get out to Miller Park and join their loyal fan base. And regardless of all this, there’s no doubting the Brewers have one of the coolest ballparks in baseball with Bernie the Brewer's slide in left field, retractable roof, luxurious yet affordable stadium club, classic tailgating atmosphere in the parking lots outside (get to the game early!), and cheese curds (a Wisconsin staple). And that’s all before you factor in the sausage race, and who doesn’t love that? Brewers games are always a great time and the whole experience is among the most affordable in the league.
