Even though the Illini sent 7’0 center Meyers Leonard to the draft, they are ready to take on the season under the leadership of Brandon Paul. The Fighting Illini are in the Big Ten Conference and will play this season under first year head coach John Groce. It will be the first time in a while the Illini will be coached by someone other than Bruce Weber, who was national coach of the year in 2005. Speaking of the 2005 season, it was a memorable one for the Illini. Lead by the three-guard trio of Dee Brown, Luther Head, and Deron Williams the Illini made it all the way to the national championship game. Deron Williams went on to have a great NBA team, and he still is. He will be a part of the hopeful trio in Brooklyn, and is praying the Nets land Dwight Howard.
This season the Fighting Illini hope to get Assembly Hall rocking again as the Orange Crush await the new season. Finishing only 17-15 last season, Groce promises to turn things around.
