The George Mason Patriots are ready to tip off their 2012-2013 college basketball season. The Patriots fell short of making it to a postseason tournament this year, which was surprising after they posted a 24-9 regular season record, going 14-4 in Colonial Athletic Association Conference play.
The Patriots play their home games at the beautiful Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia. The Patriots lose some great talent, and will take this year as a rebuilding year as both their best players were seniors last season. Ryan Pearson went undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft, but had solid numbers, scoring 17 points and grabbing 8.2 rebounds a game in his senior season. Mike Morrison will also graduate. Although the Patriots last made the NCAA Tournament in 2011, their magical season came in 2006.
In 2006 the Patriots were given #11 seed in the NCAA Tournament. As most people penciled the Patriots out in the first round, they became a huge bracket buster. They upset the previous years Final Four team Michigan State Spartans in the first round. Riding high, they went on to face the defending National Champion North Carolina Tar Heels in the Round of 32, who they upset as well. In the Sweet 16 they breezed by mid-major Wichita State to face the National Champion favorite Uconn Huskies in the Elite 8. The game was one of the best in the tournament, as the Patriots pulled away 86-84 for a tremendous overtime victory. In the programs first even Final Four, they squared off against Al Horford, Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, and the Florida Gators. The Gators NBA starting lineup proved to be too much for the Patriots, as they were defeated by the eventual national champions.
