Dallas Mavericks

2013 Result: 41-41, missed playoffs

The Mavs have been regressing ever since winning the Finals in 2011 and this past season saw them miss the playoffs for the first time since 2000.  Much of the blame falls on defense where the Mavs ranked just 27th in the league.  Vince Carter was actually pretty productive when he was on the court, which surprised many, as he posted his highest three-point field-goal percentage in nearly a decade and made the most of his minutes scoring-wise.  Dirk Nowitzki (17.3 PPG), though, had his worst season since 1999.  Who knows where they would have been without O.J. Mayo (15.3 PPG), acquired from Memphis a year ago.  But it’s time to get younger for the Mavs, and it needs to start now.  Of the seven players who played the most minutes last year, five of them were 30 or older, and both non-30-year-olds, 25-year-olds Darren Collison and O.J. Mayo, signed with the Clippers and Bucks, respectively, already.  At least they also let go of Elton Brand and Chris Kaman, two washed-up veterans who are near the end of their careers.  To replace all these departures, the Mavs signed Jose Calderon, Wayne Ellington, Monta Ellis, and resigned 35-year-old Shawn Marion.  Ellis may be a superstar but he’s just being signed as a stopgap all of this decline in production.  They did snag Miami point guard Shane Larkin in the draft, but it remains to be seen if he’s ready to start and lead right now.  Will he be ready before Nowitzki retires?  Who knows.  That could be the essential question of the next few years.  In a division with powerhouses Houston, San Antonio, and Memphis, it won’t be easy to stack wins.

The Dallas Mavericks were founded in 1979 as an expansion team for Dallas and represent the city in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference.  The Mavs are one of the most valuable teams in the NBA and won their first NBA championship in 2011 after a decade of playoff frustrations.  Some of the best players to play in Dallas include Dirk Nowitzki, Dennis Rodman, and Jason Kidd.  They currently play their home games at the American Airlines Center.  Become a part of history by getting your tickets to the Dallas Mavericks’ 2013-14 NBA season today!
