Washington State football has been in a dark stretch for some time, as they haven’t made a bowl since 2003 and haven’t won more than four games since 2007. Remarkably, they still had the 9th-best passing attack last season (more than 3,900 yards) behind quarterbacks Jeff Tuel and Connor Holliday, who threw a combined 23 touchdowns but 21 interceptions. The offense was highly unbalanced, as leading rusher Carl Winston only got 85 carries for 3.3 yards per carry. In fact, they only scored six rushing touchdowns all year. Winston is gone, so Teondray Caldwell will take over the lion’s share of carries. The Cougars were remarkably balanced at receiver with four guys making at least 42 receptions, and all of them return. Defense was a challenge for WSU and will be again, so they’ll have to hope the offense can keep up. With a tough conference schedule as usual, Washington State is going to have to beat non-conference opponents to get their wins.
The Washington State Cougars are members of the Pac 12 Conference. They operate under head coach Mike Leach at Martin Stadium, which holds just over 35,000 fans. The Cougars have had a few famous NFL players throughout the years; however, currently the most notable include: Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson, Buffalo Bills kicker Rian Lindell, and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant. The Cougars had a run in the early 2000’s where they made a BCS game and were winning more than 10 games in a season. They have rivalries with Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Oregon State.
