Lollapalooza Spotlight: Gramatik
Rooster Magazine called him “EDM’s game changer” this May. He’s got his own record label with a pretty chill name: Lowtemp. He still gives away all his music for free, per a “free music by making music free” philosophy. And he speaks six languages. Slovenia native Denis “Gramatik” Jasarevic has followed up big time on a lifelong passion for a huge variety of music. By age three he was listening to American funk, soul, and blues, and jazz from his older sister’s cassette tapes. Over the coming years he got into more hip-hop and electronic sounds, and by age 13 he was mixing his own beats on a computer. And that was in 1997; GarageBand wouldn’t be invented for nearly a decade.
Thanks to electronic music sharing website Beatport, Gramatik gained enough notoriety to land his first agent in the US in 2008. He moved to Brooklyn, and a year later he joined fellow electronic artist Derek “Pretty Lights” Vincent Smith on his record label, Pretty Lights Music. Pretty Lights is also now a big name in EDM, but back in ’09 the record label was just the two of them looking to work their way up. The partnership formed in large part thanks to philosophy overlap; Pretty Lights Music was completely on board with Gramatik’s insistence of giving away his music for free. Having found much success of his own, Gramatik started the Lowtemp label last year and has since signed on five more artists. From Gramatik, you’ll find a unique combination of electronic in chill, dubstep, hip-hop, and even trap. Album The Age of Reason dropped this January, instantly adding to his list of his best tracks. And yes, it’s free. What’s not to like about this guy?!
Must hear song: “So Much for Love”
