Lollapalooza Spotlight: Jhené Aiko
About Jhené Aiko
LA native Jhené Aiko is one of the fastest-rising vocal stars in R&B right now, but she’s garnered much attention for her solo career from expanding her talents to the world of hip-hop. Appearing on Drake single “From Time” and Big Sean’s single “Beware” meant a whole new base of people got to hear her deep, soothing voice. Previously she had released mixtape sailing soul(s), but her solo career took a huge jump with the November release of her first EP Sail Out, which peaked at #8 on the US chart.
Aiko has quite a background and personal story that makes her unique. She’s of Japanese, African American, Native American, and Dominican descent, and has a six-year-old daughter named Namiko. She recorded song “For My Brother” on his laptop in July 2012, shortly before he died from cancer. It was only meant for his ears originally. Aiko has taken creativity to the next level, introducing the public to one of her 12 alter egos, J. Hennessey, on recent songs. J. Hennessy is her aggressive rapper alter ego. And while “The Worst” is her must-hear song here, singles “Stay Ready” featuring Kendrick Lamar and “Bed Peace” featuring Childish Gambino (yes, more collaborations) are definitely excellent works as well.
Must Hear Song: “The Worst”
