Motown In Town
Hear the famed Motown sound and a whole lot more now through August 9th at Oriental Theater’s Motown: The Musical!
After a successful launch on Broadway that began in April 2013 the 28-city tour of Motown kicked off in Chicago and will continue through September 6, 2015 in Charlotte. They’re performing a rigorous eight shows per week, including two on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The plotline of Motown follows the achievements of Berry Gordy, founder of the Motown Records label, one the most influential and innovative music production companies of the 20th Century. Gordy used money made from songwriting to buy a house on Grand Boulevard in Detroit, later to be known as ‘Hitsville USA’.
The unassuming house functioned as a low-budget recording studio and production facility for some of the most legendary names in R&B to date. Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Marvelettes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and The Jackson 5 are the biggest of the performers from that time. The famous ‘Motown Sound’ was created with hardly any technology; in the studio room, sound was channeled up into a chamber on the floor above that would make it sound more robust and deep, then recorded.
Motown Records quickly took over the country in incredible fashion. It had 110 top 10 hits between 1961 and 1971. Young Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder are all credited in the musical, so you can expect names you know to be in the show.
In 1972 Motown Records moved to a more professional space in Los Angeles where it remained until a demise in the late 1990s. The original house in Detroit, however, is now a museum that has been restored to contain its 60s equipment. Interactive, sweet-sounding tours are given six days a week.
