Chicago Fire Report

Fire look to build off recent run of success, keep key players as World Cup approaches.

During the World Cup period a majority of Major League Soccer clubs lose their most talented players to the national team. Key upcoming Fire opponents, the LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders, will be without superstar player Clint Dempsey among others. The Fire, who have seen an increase in form over the last few matches, will not be sending any of their players to the World Cup. The next two games versus these respective teams, once a daunting task, now serve as important opportunities for the Fire to rise in the standings.

The Chicago Fire started off the 2014 MLS season with an unprecedented 6 draws in a row. Sandwiched in between those draws were two 3 to 2 losses. Taking only 6 points from from the opening 8 games left much to be desired and the Fire at the bottom of the standings in the Eastern Conference. Recently, however, the Fire have improved their play tallying off two wins in a row against perennial contenders, the NY Red Bulls and Sporting KC.

This recent run of success has been due to finding the back of the net on a more consistent basis. With 6 goals in the last two games the Fire have seen their MVP, Mike Magee, play like one and Rookie of the Year candidate, local product, and Notre Dame standout, Harrison Shipp control the midfield upping his assist numbers to a team leading 4 . It has been surprise forward, Quincy Amarikwa, who leads the Fire with 5 goals so far in this year’s campaign. The UC Davis product joined the Fire in 2013 but played sparingly. Amarikwa has now become one of the Fire’s most deadly players in front of net. Look for Magee, Shipp, and Amarikwa to play a big role in the Fire’s upcoming matches as they attempt to push back into the playoff picture.
