2013-14 BCS Bowl Breakdown
Rose Bowl - Michigan State Spartans vs. Stanford Cardinal
Wednesday, January 1st @ 5:00pm ESTFans of old-school, smash-mouth football will thoroughly enjoy this year's matchup in the 100th annual Rose Bowl. The Michigan State Spartans will represent the Big Ten and will be opposed by Pac-12's representative, the Standford Cardinal. Michigan State made its way into the Rose Bowl after upsetting then #2, Ohio State. In a game that came down to the last few minute, the Spartans single-handedly prevented the Buckeyes from appearing in their first national championship since 2002. Stanford, on the other hand, had no trouble stamping their ticket to Pasadena, amassing 517 total yars on their way to a 38-14 win over Arizona State. With each of these teams' defenses ranked in the top 10 in the nation, there is no doubt this will be an offensive struggle for both sides. With points expected to be at a premium, don't be surprised if this game comes down to either side's offense making a big play in crunch time.
Prediction: Slow paced, low scoring, with the score remaining close throughout the game. Michigan State comes through for the Big Ten on a last minute FG as the Spartans win 23-20.
Fiesta Bowl - Baylor Bears vs. University of Central Flordia Knights
Wednesday, January 1st, 2014 @ 8:30pm ESTThe Fiesta Bowl matches up two teams led by quarterbacks who are heading to the NFL after their collegiate careers are over; Bryce Petty from Baylor will oppose Blake Bortles from UCF. Led by these two standout quarterbacks, scoring figures to be through the roof; Baylor leads college football, averaging 53.3 points per game, while UCF is no pushover, averaging 33.3 points per game this season. UCF also comes in with a top 15 defense in the nation, allowing a mere 19.6 points per game. However, it appears no defense in the nation is capable of slowing down Bryce Petty and the Baylor offense. Barring a complete letdown by Baylor, this game should remain fairly onesided throughout.
Prediction: UCF hasn't faced an offense nearly as potent as Baylor's and while Bortles is an elite quarterback in college football, UCF will not be able to keep up with Baylor's high scoring offense. Baylor controls the game throughout and wins easily, 41-20.
Sugar Bowl - Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Oklahoma Sooners
Thursday, January 2nd, 2014 @ 8:30pm ESTOne of the more interesting matchups of the BCS bowl games is the Sugar Bowl between Alabama and Oklahoma. Alabama comes in after being heavy favorites to win the National Championship throughout the season. All was going as expected until 'Bama was upset by Auburn on one of the best finishes in college football history. On the other sideline, Oklahoma enters the game after fighting all season to make a BCS bowl after dropping 2 early games in the season. Unlike the majority of the BCS bowl games, this one figures to be a low scoring affair. Alabama enters with the nation's top defense, while the Sooners will oppose with a top 20 defense of their own. Alabama will undoubtedly be running on all cylinders, looking to blow out the Sooners and show the rest of college football that they truly are the best team in the nation, despite their one blemish versus Auburn.
Prediction: Alabama is too hungry and motivated to lose this game. Their defense should be able to handle Blake Bell and the Sooners, who have struggled at times this season. Barring any finishes with the likes of the Auburn game, Alabama wins handedly, 31-17.
Orange Bowl - Clemson Tigers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes
Thursday, January 3rd, 2014 @ 8:30pm ESTOh, what could have been. Ohio State had an opportunity to lock up a spot in the National Championship but was upset by Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship game to force them into the Orange Bowl. Instead, they find themselves matched up against a very dangerous Clemson squad. Quarterback Braxton Miller will lead the Buckeyes, opposed by Tajh Boyd taking the snaps for Clemson. This game figures to be a shootout and could very well come down to which team has the last possession. Both teams are top 10 in the nation in offense, while struggling to keep teams from scoring on defense.
Prediction: This game is a toss up. In the end, Tajh Boyd and standout wide receiver Sammy Watkins will be too much for the struggling Ohio State defense. Clemson wins it in the 4th quarter, 45-35.
National Championship - Florida State Seminoles vs. Auburn Tigers
Monday, January 6th, 2013 @ 8:30pm EST
This year's National Championship game matches up two teams who enter the game with tons of momentum. Florida State comes in after cruising through their schedule easily, winning by double digits in every single game. Auburn, on the other hand, enters the game after a much tougher schedule. Not only did Auburn have to deal with the powerhouses of the SEC, they needed two huge last second plays to pull off wins against Alabama and Georgia. The main focus for Florida State will be shutting down Auburn's nation leading rushing attack, averaging an astounding 335yds per game. Florida State will counter with the nation's best defense, in terms of points against. Much like many of Auburn's games this season, this game should go down as a classic.
