Upcoming Chicago Soccer Events
Looking for the most exciting fútbol in Chicago this summer? Look no further! A couple major international events come to Soldier Field in addition to the Chicago Fire bringing the action to Bridgeview.
Messi & Friends @ Soldier Field – July 6th
The “Messi and Friends” event, taking place a Soldier Field on July 6th, will highlight some of the best soccer players in the world. The event benefits international superstar Lionel Messi’s children’s charity and could become annual. Messi plays for FC Barcelona and the Argentinian national team. Other players include Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, Alex Song, Ricky Alvarez, Sergio Busquets, Marek Hamsik, David Luiz, Carlos Bocanegra, Michael Bradley, and Diego Perez.
Although the game is a ‘friendly’, meaning an exhibition match, the game is being marketed through its rare and astounding collection of superstars. Much like the NFL Pro Bowl or MLB All-Star Game, it will give fans the opportunity to see so many fantastic players on the same field, whereas even the World Cup only shows a few stars per national team. Get your tickets to see the best footballers in the world play together!
CONCACAF Gold Cup Final @ Soldier Field – July 28th
The CONCACAF Gold Cup is a major intercontinental tournament of the best national teams of North and South America, taking place every two years. The winner of the tournament wins a trip to a playoff against the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup winner, and the winner of that playoff earns a berth in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, a tournament of the eight best national teams in the world.
As the only three North American teams, Canada, Mexico, and the United States all earn automatic bids. Four teams (Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, and Martinique) come from the Caribbean zone as they were the top four teams in the 2012 Caribbean Cup, and five teams (Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Belize, and Panama) come from the Central American zone as they were the top five teams in the 2013 Copa Centroamericana. Teams are divided into Groups A, B, and C, followed by knockout stages leading up to the final.
Matches begin July 7th and continue until the final on the 28th, taking place all over the country.
The US is highly successful in this tournament with four titles since the first tournament in 1991. Although Mexico has taken the last two titles (2009 and 2011), the US took 2005 and 2007 and could take this tournament. American stars Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey hope they will be at Soldier Field on July 28th–but will you be?
