From Scotland to Missouri, Trainspotting Debuts in the USA
This Fall the dark comedy Trainspotting USA will be making its world premiere at Chicago’s Theater Wit. The play is based on author Irvine Welsh’s novel, Trainspotting, that follows a group of friends from Edinburgh, Scotland who are living with heroin addictions. The friends deal with the destructiveness of their drug problems and the abundance of issues that result from them. This includes everything from addiction and intervention to becoming diagnosed with AIDS. The story follows the young teenagers and their uncompromising dilemmas with life, relationships, and drugs.
The novel gained a great response and was adapted as a film only a few years after being published, and has since created a huge cult following. Irvine Welsh, who is now a Chicago local, has taken part in rewriting the story alongside Harry Gibson and director Tom Mullen to prepare it for the stage and an American audience. The locale has been changed as the play is set in Kansas City, Missouri. Don’t worry though, it still features the same characters from the novel and film, casting Thad Anzur as Begbie, Jay Cullen as Tommy, Shane Kenyon as Renton, Cameron Johnson as Spud, Rian Jairell as Sick Boy, and Jenny Lamb as Allison.
