A Newly Ranked World #1
‘It’s been a long time coming’ is hard to say about a 22 year old reaching #1, but it certainly feels like that. Rory McIlroy took down the Honda Classic on Sunday to become the #1 golfer in the world. He has been destroying fields for quite some time now, including his US Open Championship last year.
Not only did Rory finally reach #1, he did it with Tiger Woods shooting a final round of 62 on Sunday. Rory only showed small signs of feeling the pressure. After Tiger eagled the 18th to card his 62, and 10 under for the tournament, Rory said he could hear the roars. He had a few approach shots find bunkers after those Tiger roars, but Rory was able to get up and down and save par each time. VERY few golfers would have been able to keep their composure and finish like Rory did. This may show what McIlroy learned from falling apart on Sunday at the 2011 Masters, how to handle the pressure, and close out a tournament.
