Gold Coast Tickets Player Interview with Northwestern Wildcats QB Dan Persa
On Saturday September 3rd (prior to the Boston College game), former Chicago Bear and expert analyst for WGN Radio, Ted Albrecht, sat down for an interview with injured Northwestern Wildcats star quarterback Dan Persa. For those of you unfamiliar with the injury, Persa suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during a game-winning play against Iowa last season. He underwent surgery and was out for the remainder of the year, including the following week's hometown Big 10 game featuring Northwestern vs. Illinois at Historic Wrigley Field. Persa sat out for Week 1's game against Boston College and it was thought that he may return for Week 2, the home opener against Eastern Illinois, when this interview was recorded. During the interview, Ted Albrecht addressed the injury with Persa, as well as his thoughts on backup quarterback Kain Colter. When asked by Albrecht about how he was feeling on a scale of 1 to 10, Persa said that it was "hard to put in number form...but close to a 10." The quarterback who passed for a 73.5% completion rate during his ten active games last year sounded very optimistic during the interview about the team as a whole, especially its senior leadership as well as its young up-and-comers. While many thought Persa would be back for the game last Saturday versus Eastern Illinois, possibly even Persa himself, that was not the case and backup sophomore QB Kain Colter stepped up in his place. Colter has since led the Wildcats to two victories, 24-17 over BC and 42-21 over Eastern Illinois and the team will head into Week 3 with a 2-0 record. In the Eastern Illinois game, Colter ran for a career-high 109 yards (3 TD) and threw for 104 more to lead Northwestern to its second 2011 season win. In the interview on 9/3 (prior to both games), Persa was asked about how Colter was playing in comparison to nine months earlier when he shared time with other backups during Persa's absence. "He's doing really well...his arm is a lot stronger than last year." Persa was in uniform and listed as a backup for the Eastern Illinois game Saturday and is still listed as "day-to-day" by Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald.
