Chicago Concert Schedule – June 2010 (Part I)
Today is Monday, May 31st. Yes, it’s Memorial Day…and yes, we’re working because our beloved Blackhawks are playing in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight.
Although it’s hard right now to think of anything besides the Hawks, I will try. Because this month is jam-packed with shows, we’ll split it up in two parts. Here’s the first half of June’s concerts:
Erykah Badu (Wed. June 2nd & Thurs. June 3rd 7:30PM – Chicago Theatre) The “First Lady of Neo-Soul” will perform live at the Chicago Theatre twice this week. For those of you unfamiliar with her sultry sound, she’s often been compared to the infamous 30’s jazz singer/songwriter Billie Holiday. Although the women are generations apart, they share a deeply personal and intimate approach to singing that manipulates phrasing and tempo for a uniquely soulful sound. N.E.R.D. and Janelle Monae will open for Erykah’s ‘OUT MY MIND, JUST IN TIME TOUR 2010 AD.’
Jewel (Fri. June 4th 8PM – Vic Theatre) Eight albums and fifteen years after Jewel’s “Pieces of You” smash-hit record, she’s still touring (good for her) and this month, the Star Light Cafe Tour will hit a crowd of 1,300 at the Vic.
Q101 Jamboree (Sat. June 5th Noon – First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre) Jamboree was Q101’s first summer fest from 1995-2002, and saw big names like Duran Duran, Garbage, Foo Fighters, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This is the first year back since the Block Party took over in ’02. And to say that Jamboree’s return is a rock festival is somewhat of an understatement.
Main Stage: Three Days Grace, Seether, Hollywood Undead, Papa Roach, Puddle of Mudd, Saliva, Janus, Story of the Year, and Coheed and Cambria. Cubby Bear side stage: Flobots, Crash Kings, AM Taxi, OK Go, Villain vs. Villain, and the Frantic.
Styx with Foreigner and Kansas (Sat. June 5th 7PM – Charter One Pavilion) The Charter One Pavilion is easily one of the best places to see a show in the city. You can’t beat an intimate outdoor venue with a view of the skyline and Lake Michigan.
This year it will see many shows come and go, but none will bring back the late 70’s to early 80’s quite like this one. The trio has had huge international success with hits like “Come Sail Away” (Styx), “I Want to Know What Love Is” (Foreigner) and “Carry On Wayward Son” (Kansas). I’m suddenly getting flashbacks of a TIME LIFE infomercial I once saw (and watched all the way through until it started repeating.)
Liza Minelli (Sun. June 6th 7:30PM – Chicago Theatre) Grammy, Academy, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Tony-Award winner Liza Minelli has earned quite the collection for herself. Obviously, she’s one of the most celebrated performers of all time. The glamourous diva will take to the stage again this June to the delight of many of her fans and devotees.
B96 Summer Bash (Sat. June 12th 5PM – Toyota Park) After cleaning up the remnants from Phish the night before, Toyota Park will host the B96 Summer Bash Saturday evening. Some of hip-hop and rap’s big names will be performing that night including Ludacris, T-Pain, and Jason Derulo. Others include Cascada, Iyaz, B.o.B, JLS, WOW, Charice, and Travis Garland. Gossip columnist Perez Hilton will be joining in on the festivities as well.
Sheryl Crow (Sun. June 13th 7PM – Ravinia Pavilion) The Grammy-Award winning folk-rocker will be making at stop at Ravinia in mid-June before she releases her new album, 100 Miles From Memphis due for release July 20th. She’s been to the Pavilion in past years, and never fails to sell out tickets to pack the lawn and pavilion to capacity. After her album is released, she is planning on headlining for the return of Lilith Fair, which will be at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre July 17th. Sheryl will not be at the Chicago date, but these ladies will.
Alright, back to Blackhawks tickets for now. After I return from vacation next week, I’ll finish up Part 2 of the Chicago Concert Lineup. I know you can’t wait…
